Explore Great Storms of the Jersey Shore

  • Beach Haven Public Library 219 North Beach Avenue Beach Haven, NJ, 08008 United States (map)

Join Scott Mazzella, author of Surviving Sandy and co-author of the expanded 2nd edition of Great Storms of the Jersey Shore as he relates gripping accounts from those who have experienced major storms along the New Jersey Shore, woven together with on-the-spot news and weather coverage.

Experience the earliest recorded storms through the devastating March '62 northeaster, the 1938 and 1944 hurricanes, the extreme northeaster of December 1992, and Superstorm Sandy in 2012 through memories and tales from those who lived through them.

Learn how storms before the era of modern building codes, flood insurance, evacuation orders, or reliable forecasts could be completely devastating and how the environmental implications of coastal living and aftereffects of Superstorm Sandy continue to affect the Jersey Shore almost a dozen years later.

Scott Mazzella is an educator, former reporter, and passionate weather-buff with a family history on Long Beach Island. His family’s home was damaged in the 1962 northeaster, and again 50 years later, in Superstorm Sandy.
