Beach Nesting Birds

  • Beach Haven Public Library 219 North Beach Avenue Beach Haven, NJ, 08008 United States (map)

BHPL hosted Todd Pover, Senior Wildlife Biologist at the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey, for a take on piping plovers and other endangered shorebirds that nest on our local beaches. He provided the most recent update about the status of piping plover breeding on LBI, including at the Holgate Unit of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, and also discussed work being done to restore habitat for piping plovers at Barnegat Light and the development of a nearby new island -- Horseshoe Island -- that now hosts the highest concentration of colonial nesting beach birds in the state. Todd has worked with beach nesting birds in New Jersey for 30 years.
