A Memory of Violets  by Hazel Gaynor

A historical novel of London’s Flower Sellers. It describes the separation of  two very poor sisters who lived in the slums near Covent Garden in the late 1800’s. The elder sister was rescued by a man who established a home for orphaned and sometimes blind or crippled children. Her lifelong search for her sister is brought full circle years later when a young woman becomes a house mother at the same mission formed years ago by philanthropist, John Groom. This book is full of surprises and is an easy read.

The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni

Sam Hell is born in 1957 with shocking red eyes. His mother, a devout Catholic, thinks he is extraordinary as he has a rare condition. Going to school is a challenge and he suffers from terrible bullying. At the Catholic School, kids call him “the devil.”

Sam does find two lifelong friends who help him as do his parents who are both amazing and wonderful. I could not put this book down as the writing is unique and the characters ring true. It is both funny and sad. Dugoni usually writes mysteries, but wrote this book in memory of his parents. Just love the twists and turns in this novel!
